Coral Morphologic Laboratory

Coral Morphologic is a Miami based art-science duo founded in 2007 by Colin Foord and Jared McKay. Specializing in digital media, Coral Morphologic connects humans and corals through large scale art exhibitions.
CGS designed and constructed five unique aquaculture and studio systems to allow Coral Morphologic to achieve its scientific and artistic goals. Of these systems, two feature shallow aquaculture tubs to maximize coral aquaculture surface area. Two additional systems of precisely aligned glass cube aquariums (pictured below) were installed to function as a display of matured or otherwise distinguished coral colonies. A final 950 gallon reef crest system rounds out the Coral Morphologic laboratory, providing a high-energy environment for Acropora sp. corals while feeding water to a lower energy aquarium featuring more gentle, fleshy stony corals.

Preparation
The success of any coral aquaculture facility depends on operational consistency over hundreds upon hundreds of days. All plumbing, lighting, and water flow systems are designed ergonomically, ensuring all necessary maintenance tasks are safely and easily accessible.
Alignment
Precision is critical during every stage of system development. Every miscalculation contributes to premature structural failure, devastating young coral progress. In a studio system, design precision consequentially becomes the absolute highest priority.
